Coercion or conversion?
As we get ready to vote, I keep asking myself a question: do we want people to live Christian lives because of coercion or because of conversion? I think the answer is obvious.
When we pass laws to make people act a certain way, it doesn’t lead to salvation or a real change of heart. Instead, it can breed resentment toward those doing the enforcing. Our goal isn’t just outward behavior. It’s true transformation, a heart and soul deeply touched by Jesus.
Romans 2:4 reminds us, “Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” (ESV). The change we hope for doesn’t come from imposing rules. It comes from meeting God’s grace and kindness.
Let’s remember: real transformation happens when people choose Jesus out of love, not because of forced actions. Whatever the outcome, let’s lead with grace and be examples of the change that only comes from within.
